How to Configure and Manage Virtual Networks? (Step by Step Guide)

There is no doubt that virtual networks provide the most secure connection, which helps in using cloud-based services efficiently. This is also called as network virtualization. It combines both software and hardware network functionality and resources into one administrative entity. It is something that will be there in the future. As per some researches, around 60 to 70 percent of all server runs by secure virtual servers.

It is proliferating, especially in the manufacturing industry. Talking about some of its benefits, it allows more applications to be run on particular hardware saving your money. That’s why more and more companies are now learning how to configure and manage virtual networks. In this useful article, you will get to know about this. But before that, it is essential to know about virtual networks and their benefits in detail. So, let’s get started with it.

What do You Mean by Virtual Networks?

The objective of the virtual network is letting a data center provide an effective network structure to the applications it has. Besides, it alters the structure based on the condition using effective software. Without a perfectly designed virtual network architecture, virtual deployment will not work correctly. Moreover, it can be prone to different unethical attacks. Virtualization comes with a lot of amazing benefits. However, to enjoy those benefits, you need to make sure that the network can handle VM traffic.

This introduction to configure and manage virtual networks helps you streamline networks. On the other side, it improves the efficiency of the virtual environment.  Besides, here, you will also get to know about how to work with azure virtual networks. Well, before diving deep into configuring and managing virtual networks, let’s understand some of the benefits.

Some Significant Benefits of Virtual Networks or Virtualization

Not to mention that virtual networks bring a number of benefits to help in using cloud-based services efficiently. So, in this section, we’ll have a look over the main benefits of the virtual networks. Let’s get ahead.

  • Hardware Cost

With this, you can significantly save massive money as you can reduce the hardware cost. Let’s talk with an example. Just imagine, you replace around five servers which cost about $3000 each, and there is just one host server. Here you will spend more than $3000 as it will out of memory in a few months. So, you spend $7000 to $10000 for the server. Then you will spend around $7,000 for the hypervisor software. All of this will cost you more.

  • Energy Costs

Different companies have identified that virtual networks have significantly reduced their electricity consumption by 80%. Virtualization requires less use of computer hardware. For instance, one computer having ten virtual servers uses one-tenth of the energy. So, it is crucial to know how to configure and manage virtual networks effectively.

  • Recoverability

One of the major benefits of virtualization is the ability to recover data in the event of hardware failures quickly. Let’s take an example. Suppose you have five servers running on separate hardware. If one severs some issues, that particular server will remain down. However, if those five servers run on two different hosts, then the failed server can bring up the working host immediately. On the other side, modern hypervisors have made it quite easy to shifting one host from another.

  • Disaster Recovery

Virtualization works excellent in a disaster recovery situation. For example, you have 20 different servers. In the event of a disaster, how long it will take to back up all the 20 servers? It can take up to 2 to 3 weeks. But when you have a virtual network, you can back up the software with just a few days. Besides, you can also restore the data quite quickly. All you need to do is just create a single host computer and install the hypervisor software. That’s it. You can now restore that.

So, these are some of the great benefits of virtual networks. Now, it’s time to learn about configuring and managing virtual networks. Here you will get to know about how to configure and manage virtual network like Azure virtual network. Besides, after the tutorial, you can azure virtual networks with private and public subnets.

One can create a virtual network through the Azure command-line interface Azure portal and PowerShell. Let’s jump into the process.

Creating a Network through Azure Portal

  • Open your internet browser and visit Microsoft Azur portal.
  • Then log in using your user ID and password. However, if you don’t have an account, then open an Azure account. It comes with a free trial period.
  • Once done, click on create a resource in a portal.
  • You will see a search for the marketplace box located on the top side of the new panel. There you need to put the Virtual network. In the result list, click on the Virtual network.
  • To configure and manage virtual network’s classic edition, you need to choose Classic. You can find it in Select, a deployment model in Virtual Network panel.
  • Now, you need to enter some values on the panel of Create a virtual network. Once done, just click on Create. For name, you can go for myVnet. In the place of address space, put Keep the subnet type Public. Now you need to choose your location and subscription.
  • While creating a virtual network, you can create only one subnet. However, to create another subnet, you will have to search for myVnet and click on it.
  • Now, click on Subnets that will be there on the Create virtual network panel.
  • Then click on Add option present on the MyVnet Subnet panel.
  • Set Private as the name on Add Subnet panel. For address, enter and click OK.
  • Now you will see both the private and public subnets.

This is the step by step process to configure and manage virtual networks through the Azure portal. Try it out now.

How to Delete the Resources If You don’t Want to Face Any Usage Charges?

While learning tips to configure and manage the virtual network, it is also essential to learn how to delete the resources. For this:

  • Open the MyVnet panel and click on Overview.
  • Now you can see the delete icon. Just click on it.
  • A Delete virtual network box will appear on the screen. Click on Yes to complete the deletion.

Configure and Manage Virtual Network

You can configure and manage virtual network by installing Azure Command Line Interface (Azure CLI). After that, you can use the CLI in the Azure Cloud Shell. Talking about Azure Cloud Shell, it is free of cost shell which one can run directly from the Azure portal. The best thing about this is it comes with Azure CLI configured to use immediately. If you want any help, type Azure <command> –help.

  • When you are in the CLI session, you need to login to your Azure account. You can also try it. Put “Azure login” command to log in the Azure.
  • You need to make sure that the service management mode is the Azure CLI. For this put “azure config mode asm” command.
  • To create a private subnet virtual network, use the following commands.
“azure network vnet create --vnetmyVnet --address-space --cidr16  --subnet-name Private --subnet-start-ip --subnet-cidr 24 --location "East US"”
  • To create a public subnet virtual networks, here is the command lines to use.
“azure network vnet subnet create --name Public --vnet-name myVnet --address-prefix”

With this, you can successfully configure and manage virtual networks.

  • To review the subnets and virtual networks, use
“azure network vnet show --vnetmyVnet.”

Management of Virtual Networks

This particular section covers virtual network management. It covers the impact of virtualization on network latency performance and some advice on improving virtual network management.

  • Virtual Switch

It is the key to successful and effective virtual networking. In detail, it is quite different from the bridges. The reason is it uplinks from physical switches via PNICs – Physical Network Interface Cards and ports. Try to learn more as much as you can about virtual switch features.

  • Virtualization’s Impact on the Configuration of a Network

There is no doubt that virtualization of the network can significantly improve scalability, performance, and connectivity of systems. But sometimes this can create issues. Here you need to learn about VLANs, NIC teaming, and media access control.

  • Network Performance in Virtualized Environments

Sometimes, virtualization can hurt network performance as well as throughput. When you integrate virtualization into the network, it also essential to consider the network traffic patterns. Besides, consider the individual switch ports.

  • Virtual Consolidation and the Impact on Network Latency

Network virtualization consists of a concentration of server. When one server change locations, it can affect network performance and throughput. However, if you can manage adequately, a virtual network can work correctly without any network latency.

  • Managing Virtual Networks by Virtual Network Editor and VMware’s Workstation

When it comes to the effective management of a virtual network, you can use VMware Workstation. In detail, it can map and bridge the networks with just a few clicks. There are different online materials which can help you in learning the Workstation. This is a perfect software which lets you configure and manage virtual networks without going through any complicated process.
