International Women's Day 2020

International Women’s Day 2020 – Women Empowerment Day

International Women’s Day is just around the corner with just a few days left to mark another successful year of cultural, political, social, technical, and economical achievements of women. The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is gender equality, which focuses on the importance of gender balance in empowering the world.

The theme for International Women’s Day in 2020 is titled, “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights” with the campaign #EachforEqual.

Interestingly, this theme aligns perfectly with the new multigenerational campaign of the UN Women known as Generation Equality.

History of International Women’s Day

Just like every year, International Women’s Day falls on 8th March 2020. With the mission to promote gender equality across all industries, this year’s International Women’s Day would run the #EachforEqual campaign throughout the year. International Women’s Day is a celebration of the significance of women in various sectors.

  • The origins of IWD kicked off in 1908 when a crowd of 15,000 women marched through New York City with demands for shorter hours, voting rights and better pay.
  • The first official celebration of the National Women’s Day on 28th February 1909 by the Socialist Party of America marked the foundation of IWD.
  • In 1911, International Women’s Day was celebrated on 19th March across four countries Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Denmark.

The year 2001 saw the launch of the internationalwomensday.com website to re-ignite the passion surrounding IWD. The IWD website has been fostering many campaigns to drive gender parity, such as #PressforProgress, #MakeItHappen, and now #EachforEqual. As of now, the world has been through significant changes in attitudes of society and women towards equality and the emancipation of women.

Notable Achievements by Women Last Year

With the return of Internation Women’s Day this year, let us take a moment to reflect on some of the inspirational women of 2019.

  • Christina Koch and Jessica Meir

Koch and Meir

Christina Koch and Jessica Meir created history in October 2019 by completing the first spacewalk involving only women. In over 50 years of spacewalking, this was the first time when men were not tasked with the duty of fixing broken parts on the International Space Station. Koch and Meir achieved this unique feat by fixing a broken part on the ISS’ power grid on their own. The whole world watched this unique feat as the ladies did their job with power-grip tools, wrenches, and screwdrivers.

  • Christie Blatchford

christie blatchfordOne of the notable names in the world of journalism, Christie Blatchford, was inducted into the Canadian News Hall of Fame in November 2019. Known for her fearless writing style and emotionally overwhelming articles, Blatchford achieved considerable recognition for her work.

  • Meghan Markle

meghan markleThe most subtle example of women, empowering the world to become a better place in 2019 is Meghan Markle, an American former actress and a member of the British royal family. Surrounded constantly by the paparazzi and media, Meghan has been criticized for the silliest of things. These things include the shade of her nail polish or eating an avocado. However, the media did not showcase her charitable work that included advocacy for gender equality and women’s health care.

So, Meghan took one of the ground-breaking decisions on behalf of her family to withdraw from all royal duties. Her decision did not agree well with the media that is so obsessed with safeguarding the sanctity of English royalty. Still, Meghan remained stuck to her decision and moved with her newborn son, Archie, and husband, Prince Harry, to Canada.

  • Bianca Andreescu

bianca andreescuAnother prominent example of the achievements of women in 2019 is Bianca Andreescu. She started off the 2019 tennis season at the 152nd rank and was an unknown tennis player from Canada. However, her dedication worked in her favor, and she was able to defeat the legendary Serena Williams at the US Open. Her hometown, Mississauga, celebrated her achievement with a rally named “She the North,”.

Role of Women in Tech Industry

Over the years, women have offered massive contributions to the field of technology. Just think of the world without Madam Marie Curie discovering Radium! Many of the technological and scientific advancements we see in present times are the products of the considerable dedication of women. As a matter of fact, the contributions of women in technology are increasingly gaining recognition and appreciation.

In my personal opinion, women in technology are a boon for the industry.

Present Condition of Women in Tech

The number of women in the tech industry is increasing every day, and there is no doubt regarding this fact. Recently, one of the premier professional associations aiming at women empowerment in Washington DC, Women in Technology, announced the finalists for the 21st Annual Leadership Awards. The names in the list gleam of the exceptional achievements women have been making in the domain of technology.

Interestingly, the list of finalists for the awards also shows how women are exercising their influence in different technology markets. For example, there are finalists in the large-market, mid-market, and small-market sectors. In addition, the awards also celebrate women working in the technology industry in the government and defense sectors. Christie Canaria from the National Cancer Institute and Judy Conley from the Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center are two notable finalists.

Women in Tech: Role Models

On this International Women’s Day, there are many female role models to look up to in the field of technology. These ladies not only motivate other women to join the movement but also encourage all sections of the society to realize the significance of women for the progress of our world. The top five female role models in the field of technology are as follows.

  • Sheryl Sandberg – Chief Operating Officer of Facebook.
  • Nicola Mendelsohn – Vice-President of Facebook for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
  • Gini Rometty – Chairman, President, and CEO of IBM
  • Susan Wojcicki – CEO of YouTube
  • Mary Barra – CEO, and Chairman of General Motors
