You’ve probably been using Claude at work for a while now. Maybe you started with it to help on small tasks, and now your team is asking you to build something bigger with it. You figured out a lot along the way, mostly by trial and error.
At some point you might have wondered how to show people what you actually know. Your manager, a client or your next employer can’t easily see that experience on your resume.
That’s where things get serious. Getting Claude to work in a quick demo takes an afternoon. Getting it to work every day, with real users, real company data and a security team asking questions, takes a lot more. You have to make the right choices about how Claude connects to your company’s tools and how you test it before launch. You also have to make sure it stays safe, and you have to keep your stakeholders on board through all of it.
Anthropic’s Claude Certified Architect – Professional (CCAR-P) certification is built around exactly those choices. It’s the most advanced of the four Claude certifications, and it’s meant for people who’ve been in the room when those decisions get made.
If you’re thinking about taking it, you probably have a lot of questions. Who can sign up? How hard is the CCAR-P exam? What’s on it? This CCAR-P exam guide answers all of them in plain language, so you know exactly what to expect before you book.
What Is the CCAR-P Certification?
The CCAR-P certification is a professional-level Anthropic certification. It validates your ability to architect and deploy production systems built on Claude. You may also see it written as CCA-P on some sites.
Anthropic currently offers four Claude certifications. Here’s where CCAR-P fits:
| Certification | Code | Level |
Best for |
| Claude Certified Associate – Foundations |
CCAO-F |
Foundations | Non-technical roles using Claude at work |
| Claude Certified Developer – Foundations |
CCDV-F |
Foundations | Developers building on the Claude API |
| Claude Certified Architect – Foundations |
CCA-F (also written CCAR-F) |
Foundations | People designing and deploying Claude applications |
| Claude Certified Architect – Professional |
CCAR-P |
Professional | Tech leads and architects who own production Claude systems |
CCAR-P is the only Professional-level exam in the lineup right now. The other three are Foundations level.
Who Should Take the CCAR-P Exam?
The Claude Certified Architect Professional exam is built for people who make the big decisions on Claude projects. That usually includes:
- Solution architects and enterprise architects
- Tech leads on AI or platform teams
- AI and cloud consultants who deliver Claude solutions to clients
- Senior AI engineers moving into architecture roles
There’s no required experience to sit the CCAR-P exam. Still, prep guides commonly recommend around 3 years of systems architecture or platform engineering work, plus at least 6 months of hands-on time with Claude or similar LLM systems in production.
Should you take CCA-F first? You don’t have to. Anthropic doesn’t require Architect Foundations before Professional. Anthropic does suggest starting at Foundations and moving up to Professional, though. If you’re newer to Claude, CCA-F is the easier starting point, and our CCA-F exam guide covers it in detail. Passing CCA-F doesn’t upgrade you to CCAR-P automatically, so you’d still need to pass the Professional exam separately.
CCAR-P Exam Format, Cost and Passing Score
| Detail |
CCAR-P |
| Number of questions | 63 |
| Question types | Multiple choice and scenario-based multiple response |
| Duration | 120 minutes (plan for about 135 minutes of seat time) |
| Passing score | 720 out of 1,000 (scaled) |
| Exam cost | $175 USD (partner discounts may apply) |
| Delivery | Online with Pearson OnVUE, or at a Pearson test center |
| Languages | English and Japanese |
| Format | Closed book. No AI assistants or browser translation tools |
| Validity | 12 months |
| Prerequisites | None |
A few points about the CCAR-P exam format that tend to confuse people:
- The 720 passing score isn’t 72%. It’s a scaled score, so it doesn’t map directly to the number of questions you get right.
- Multiple-response questions have no partial credit. On a “Select TWO” question, you need both answers right to score.
- Results show up right away. You’ll see your score on screen when you finish. Your score report also shows how you did in each domain, which helps if you need to retake.
CCAR-P Exam Domains and Weights
The CCAR-P exam covers seven domains. Here’s what each one tests in plain terms.
1. Integration (19%)
This is the biggest domain on the CCAR-P exam. It covers how Claude connects to the systems around it through MCP (Model Context Protocol), APIs and other agents. You’ll also see questions on permissions for tools, secrets handling and RAG (retrieval) setups, along with what to do when an integration fails.
2. Solution Design & Architecture (17%)
This domain checks whether you can turn a business need into the right Claude design. You’ll be asked to pick between a simple LLM call, a fixed workflow and a full agent setup. You’ll also need to know when splitting work across multiple agents makes sense. The safest pattern is usually the simplest one that meets the requirement.
3. Evaluation, Testing & Optimization (16%)
This domain is about proving your system works before and after launch. It covers building test datasets, choosing the right metrics, and using code-based graders, LLM-as-judge and human review. You’ll also need to diagnose problems, such as telling a retrieval issue apart from a model issue.
4. Governance, Safety & Risk Management (14%)
You’ll need to know where guardrails belong and where a human should review actions. Expect scenarios on data access, incident handling and compliance frameworks like GDPR and HIPAA. A key idea here is that compliance needs real controls in the system. A line in the prompt isn’t enough.
5. Stakeholder Communication & Lifecycle Management (14%)
This domain tests the consulting side of the job. It covers running discovery, setting realistic expectations with business teams and explaining tradeoffs in business terms. It also covers managing a system through release, change control and ongoing review.
6. Claude Models, Prompting & Context Engineering (13%)
Here you’ll choose the right Claude model for a job based on capability, cost and speed. Expect questions on few-shot prompting and chain-of-thought, along with prompt caching and how to manage what goes into the context window. Anthropic’s prompt engineering guide is a good place to brush up.
7. Developer Productivity & Operational Enablement (7%)
The smallest domain covers how teams work with Claude day to day. Think shared project settings, documentation, rollout checks and safe permissions in shared or CI environments.
Where to focus: Integration and Solution Design together make up over a third of the CCAR-P exam. Candidates who’ve passed also say the questions feel consultative. Many scenarios ask what you’d recommend to a client, so business judgment matters as much as technical knowledge.
How to Register for the CCAR-P Exam
CCAR-P registration is the part that surprises most people, so read it carefully before you plan your prep.
Who can register? According to Anthropic’s eligibility page, Claude certification exams are open only to people who work at an organization in the Claude Partner Network. You can’t register as an individual right now.
Email requirements: You need to sign in with your company email, and the domain has to be listed on your organization’s partner record. Personal email addresses won’t work. If your email isn’t recognized, contact [email protected] to get your domain added. This usually takes 7 to 10 days, so sort it out early.
Steps to register:
- Sign in to the Anthropic Partner Academy with your company email.
- Choose the CCAR-P exam on the certifications page and pay the fee.
- Anthropic emails you a Pearson VUE link.
- Book your slot, either online or at a test center.
Your registration stays valid for 5 years, so you can book the exam whenever you’re ready within that window.
On exam day: You must be 18 or older and bring a valid government-issued photo ID. The name on your Pearson profile must match your ID exactly. If you’re testing online, run Pearson’s OnVUE system test ahead of time. A work laptop may need your IT team to allow certain sites.
What if my company isn’t a partner? Companies that deliver Claude solutions to clients can apply to join at claude.com/partners. Until then, you can still take Anthropic’s courses and start preparing with CCAR-P practice tests.
How to Prepare for the CCAR-P Exam
How long CCAR-P exam prep takes depends on your experience. If you already design Claude systems at work, a few focused weeks may be enough. If you’re newer to production AI, give yourself more time.
Step 1: Read the official exam guide
Download the official CCAR-P exam guide from the Partner Certifications page. Go through each domain and note which ones you can already explain confidently and which ones need work.
Step 2: Take Anthropic’s free prep course
Anthropic offers a learning path for the Claude Certified Architect Professional certification on the Partner Academy. Candidates who’ve passed say it covers a lot of what the exam asks.
Step 3: Build or review real projects
CCAR-P rewards hands-on experience. Practice designing a RAG system, connecting tools through MCP and setting up evaluations. Think through the tradeoffs behind every choice, because the exam asks why you’d pick one option over another.
Step 4: Practice with exam-style questions
CCAR-P practice tests show you how the questions are worded and how quickly you need to move. They also show which domains you’re weakest in. Aim to score comfortably above passing before you book the real exam.
Common mistakes to avoid on the CCAR-P exam:
- Picking the most powerful model for every task, even when a faster, cheaper one would do
- Choosing an agent when a simple workflow would solve the problem
- Relying on prompt instructions to meet a compliance requirement
- Adding more context to fix poor answers when the real problem is retrieval quality
- Skipping discovery and building before success criteria are agreed
