Role Of Management in Implementing Six Sigma Projects

The term Sigma is the standard deviation, the standardized figures from the acceptance mean level and whenever the number of deviations measure beyond the tolerance mean limit is six, it indicates that the organization is not producing the quality products.  Six Sigma is a statistical benchmark for quality assurance and so, it is considered as a quality management approach for delivering the products to a perfect standard with zero errors.

The Six Sigma Project is one of the statistical tools that is used for rating performances and basically focuses on customer satisfaction by delivering the quality product, and eliminating all the defects in the products. A defect is an offset from the standard and tool for evaluating the defect is known as defects per million opportunities. To measure the organizational’s performance, its sigma level is taken into consideration. The organization that runs at six sigma will have an average of 3.4 problems per million opportunities. The major difference will make a huge difference between the success and the failure of the project.

Six Sigma is an approach to quality management because all the defects are removed while achieving zero errors. It is defined to solve organization’s problems by following quality improvement method. Thus, Six Sigma Projects are defined as the process by which the organization is able to reduce any defect in the manufacturing process as well as improve upon its quality.

The implementation of Six Sigma will depend upon where improvement is required, whether it is required in existing process or in new product designing. It involves improvement in the processes for delivering consistent achievement of goals, according to the organizational strategies.

The project selection is done after analyzing its pros and cons properly. The right project selection in a  Six Sigma Project is very important for the successful project.

Not every project can save the same amount of money and so, do not always look for the projects in monetary aspect, eliminate the draconian procedures and also, improve the employee’s contentment and the promises of producing better results which will further induce improvements in the upcoming projects.

The Six Sigma Projects can be a failure if the goals and objectives are not clearly defined, there is no management support, and lack of proper training to Six Sigma teams who are associated with the project.

The management must always motivate its employees, in order to achieve the desired result through a Six Sigma project. The project team must be given a message from the top management, to ensure that it is relevant for the quality improvement. If such developments are not considered important for project implementations the majority of projects fail because the project team does not lend their full support and cooperation for carrying out implementations. However, implementation of Six Sigma is not an easy task and require professional expertise who guide the Six Sigma implementation team. The organization can either opt for the specialized professional Six Sigma training for their own employees, or hire Six Sigma professionals from outside.

However, sometimes the project deviates from its track. The deviations should never be left undetected, otherwise, it can pose a threat to the project and may cause a project failure. Both internal and external Six Sigma auditing teams must conduct a regular check and the causes for its occurrence. Accordingly, the training of the Six Sigma team members can be conducted. Therefore, Six Sigma projects when implemented intelligently and deftly, it can be a great success.
